Experience Gifts

On my recent trip to Napa with my girlfriends, they gave me a great idea, experience gifts! After one our amazing visit to Chappellet, my girlfriends, Colleen and Liz gifted their in-laws/parents a wine tasting “experience”. They bought a few different bottles, which most could only be bought at the winery, and surprised them Christmas morning with not only the wines, but telling them that the big part of the gift was that they would be hosting a wine pairing night for them! This means they will be making different dishes that pair with the wines they gifted! I loved the idea so much that we ended up doing the same thing for Joel’s parents. They cashed in on their gift this weekend, check it out below!

The wines we gifted were the following:

  • Domaine Gassier Viognier – I tried a Viognier at Freemark Abbey in Napa and fell in love. For this wine, it paired well with buttery cheeses. I used a Saint Andre (always a go to for me), a truffle cheese on sale at whole foods, and Mimolette, not buttery, but provided a different texture and some dimension to the board! I used some spicy crackers for the cheeses and Proscuitto di Parma.
  • Chappellet Mountain Cuvee– As Chappellet themselves said, this wine doesn’t need food to taste amazing! But we paired this delicious red blend with short ribs I made in the slow cooker and a mushroom orzo side dish.
  • Orin Swift Mute– If you can get your hands on one of these, do it, you will not be disappointed. Dessert wines were definitely a trend when we were in Napa and this was my favorite. We paired this with a chocolate souffle which the sweetness of the souffle paired PERFECTLY with the Mute. So good, we finished the whole bottle!

Overall, everyone had such a nice time trying new wines, enjoying delicious food and spending quality time together! These last few weeks and the next few weeks coming up have been overwhelmingly busy, so to be able to take a break for a few hours to enjoy some of our favorite things was a real treat!

If you’d like to do something similar here are a few tips and recommendations:

  • Plan what you’d like to cook first, then plan your wine! Unless you have a particular wine in mind. In my case, the only wine I had picked out before hand was the Mute since I had brought it back from California.
  • Visit a local wine shop for good suggestions, as opposed to a big chain store. If you’re local in Miami, I highly suggest Sunset Corners. Anyone there can give you amazing recommendations and they usually have some things you may not find at a bigger store.
  • Do your research on the wines your serving. You may be surprised about what you learn!

A quick change of topic…I want to thank everyone who has joined this blogging journey with me and all the support you’ve shown in the last 15 weeks or so! The beginning of January will be a little quiet for LiveLoveFinds as I will be getting married January 11th and shortly after we will be going on our honeymoon! Expect lots of amazon finds and travel suggestions following that!

Can’t wait to catch up with you all in the new decade! Happy New Year!

Christmas Morning

Sure, Christmas morning is about presents, but what about the food?! We’ve started a few Christmas morning/Christmas day traditions in our house, depending on which house Thomas is waking up in! This year, he’ll be waking up with us so we’ll have his cousins and Joel’s family over so we can all open presents together and enjoy that breakfast you see pictured above!

That gorgeous casserole you see above is actually the unbaked version of what I’ll be baking Christmas morning. I found the original version of this everything bagel casserole recipe quite some time ago and have made it a few times, but in true #livelovefinds style, I wanted to make some changes and make it my own. My favorite part of this recipe and what makes it perfect for Christmas day is that you can make it up to a day or two before and leave it in the fridge until you’re ready to bake! Can’t wait to dig into this!

Everything Bagel Casserole

Ingredients (10 people)

  • 5 everything bagels, cut into small cubes
  • 2 boxes of Taylor Ham*, cooked and diced
  • 2 cups of Gruyere Cheese, shredded (I like a thicker shred for this recipe)
  • 8 oz of Cream cheese, cut into small cubes
  • 7 large eggs
  • 2 cups Heavy Cream
  • Salt*
  • Pepper*

*Note: As always, I guesstimate my seasoning! This recipe originally called for bacon, but I LOVE Taylor Ham. If you know, you know. If not, educate yourself here. When I discovered that my usual Publix sells Taylor Ham right next to the Canadian Bacon, I never looked back.

Directions

  1. Grease a 13×9 casserole dish
  2. Add 1/2 of the following ingredients: everything bagels, Taylor ham, Gruyere cheese and cream cheese
  3. Repeat with the other half of following: everything bagels, Taylor ham, Gruyere cheese and cream cheese
  4. In a bowl, combine eggs, heavy cream and preferred seasoning. Whisk until combined.
  5. Pour heavy cream and egg mixture evenly over bagels making sure all are covered.
  6. Tightly cover dish and refrigerate for 4 hours or up to two days.
  7. When you are ready to bake, preheat oven to 350 °
  8. Bake casserole with aluminum foil for 40 minutes, remove foil then continue to bake for 15 minutes.
  9. Let cool and enjoy!

Let me know in the comments below if you try this recipe and what your thoughts are!

I wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season!

#AlanasLastSyrah

If you follow me on social media, you are well aware that this past weekend was my bachelorette party in Napa! For what felt like the first time in my life, I had no part in the planning process. Terrifying, yes, worth every second of anxiety leading up to the trip, ABSOLUTELY. My ladies know me well and that definitely was reflected in our itinerary, check it out below!

Thursday:

  • Delayed arrival into SFO (as a result we missed a tasting, but everything happens for a reason), rented our car
  • Pit stop at In-n-Out
  • Arrive at our super adorable and friendliest hotel, Calistoga Motor Lodge & Spa. The staff was fantastic, the rooms so adorable, and the spa and mineral pools are the perfect way to end a hard day of trying wine!
  • Dinner at Farmstead. This was my ONE request to my girls when planning this trip. Joel and I had dined here a few years back based on a locals recommendation and we still talk about that dinner! Interestingly enough, anytime we asked locals for recommendations, Farmstead was always the first one!

Friday:

  • Quick bite to eat at Bella Bakery before starting a full day of tasting. Their Strawberry Balsamic muffin was delicious!
  • First tasting at Freemark Abbey. We were able to do a comparative tasting which was a first for me! This meant we got to try wines side by side to understand their differences. Fun fact about Freemark Abbey, it was the first Winery in the valley started by a woman!
  • Next tasting at Honig. Their property and tasting room were SO gorgeous! We had a wonderful host and a whole room to ourselves which was so intimate! We all left with at least one bottle, me with two and with some honey straight from their property. If you like dessert wine and have the opportunity to try this, I highly recommend!
  • We then stopped for lunch at La Luna, a taqueria and market with AMAZING (I had chorizo and beef tongue) tacos. If you don’t like spicy, ask for the sauce on the side!
  • Next stop, Beringer, we got a special tour of their caves which was so fun while sipping on their wines!
  • After our day of tastings, we stopped at Sam’s Social Club for a drink and snacks, the Deviled Eggs were amazing!
  • We had one last tasting of the day, conveniently located in our hotel lobby! The winemaker and owner of Solorio Family Wines hosted a tasting and it was so nice being able to learn about his passion for wine making and meet his daughter!
  • Finally, we finished our night with a delicious dinner at Lovina. If you have the chance to check it out, I highly recommend their oysters and their duck which was cooked to perfection!

Saturday:

  • The girls planned a special breakfast for me at Solbar, this may have been one of my favorite meals. We practically ordered the entire menu, but the avocado toast really stuck out for me!
  • We headed to our first tasting at the Orin Swift tasting room. If you get the opportunity to check it out, I highly recommend. Unlike any other tasting room in Napa, think rap music playing while sipping some delicious wines!
  • Next we headed to Louis M. Martini, I cannot say enough great things about how GORGEOUS this winery is. They’ve just renovated and it’s like Restoration Hardware heaven!
  • Finally, we had one of my favorite tastings of the weekend and not open to the public, at The Spire Collection. Here we got to taste wines from the Jackson Family Wine portfolio, but what really made this a treat was our host Dale. He took so much time in not only getting to know us, but in educating us.
  • After a laborious day of tasting, we headed back to our hotel for some famous Calistoga mud baths and a dip in our mineral pools! This was JUST what we needed!
  • We finished our evening at RH Yountville. If you haven’t heard by now Restoration Hardware has opened up quite a few restaurants and Younteville hosts one of them. Not only do I love Yountville, but this is arguably one of the most Instagrammed spots in Napa! It’s no wonder as your sitting underneath an olive tree with a chandelier!

Sunday:

  • On our final day we had some vouchers from our hotel to use for breakfast at Calistoga Roastery. I had a delicious spinach croissant!
  • Our one and only tasting of the day was at Chappallet. This was also one of my favorite experiences of the weekend! We tasted Chappallet’s amazing family wines in a private room surrounded by their wine barrels! Unfortunately, we didn’t get to tour the winery itself as it was under construction, but we did get a tour of the property which may be one of the most beautiful grounds I’ve ever seen! Lindsey was an amazing host!
  • Before heading back to San Fran, we stopped at a Napa classic, Mustard’s Grill. Highly recommend anything lamb off their menu and hopefully you get lucky enough to try their Pineapple Upside Down Cake (this was a special)!
  • San Francisco is not my favorite place to say the least. After some tedious driving around, we stopped at Saru for dinner. No one was hungry, but we had only heard amazing things about Saru and it was certainly not a let down! Super fresh sushi, great recommendations by our waitress as well! I would recommend getting there before their opening time as there is a line to get in! At this point our bellies were full and we were ready to head to SFO for our red eye flights back home.

This weekend was truly a dream for me. Not only was I in one of my favorite places in the world, but I got to enjoy it with some of my favorite people and share with them something Joel and I love so much, wine!

* Note, because my best friend Kamille is in the hospitality business, selling wine specifically, she was able to arrange exclusive tastings, not open to the public. While our tastings may have been different, you can still reserve tastings that are open to the public at all of the wineries we visited!

Taco Tuesday

With holiday season in full swing and our wedding around the corner, we are making some big efforts around here in December to be eating a little cleaner. Today, I’m sharing with you one of our favorite taco recipes. These cauliflower tacos are perfect for a #meatlessmonday meal or a day like today, taco Tuesday! The best part, these tacos are pretty much on the table in 30 minutes!

When I first started making this recipe, it was #BAF, before air fryer. Now that we have an air fryer, this recipe is ready in half the time! Below, check out this recipe, a link to shop my exact air fryer, and some pictures of all the fun stuff we’ve been up to!

Cauliflower Tacos

Ingredients: (This will make 6 tacos)

  • 1 head of cauliflower, chopped into florets
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • Juice of 4 limes (3 for cauliflower, 1 for dairy free sour cream)
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Garlic Powder
  • Chipotle Powder
  • Onion Powder
  • 1/4 a cup of dairy free plain yogurt (I used this one)
  • 1/4 a cup of diced red onion
  • Corn or flour tortillas
  • Dairy free shredded cheese of your choice (we used cheddar because it’s what we had)

Directions:

  1. Preheat air fryer to 370°F. If using a regular oven, preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. In a large bowl combine cauliflower florets, olive oil, juice of 3 limes, salt, pepper, garlic powder, chipotle powder and onion powder. Season to your liking and combine.
  3. When heated, place cauliflower in air fryer (or oven). If cooking in air fryer cook for 6 minutes at 370°F. After 6 minutes, shake your cauliflower (my air fryer doesn’t have a shake option, so I do this manually) and cook again for another 6 minuets at 370°F. If cooking in a regular oven, cook for 20-25 minutes at 375°F.
  4. While your cauliflower is cooking, mix the 1/4 cup of day free yogurt with juice of one lime to create your sour cream.
  5. When cauliflower is ready, create your tacos whichever way you’d like with your preferred toppings and enjoy!

Notes: As always, I don’t measure my spices and just eyeball what I add, always using a touch more of the ones we really like, here’s looking at you chipotle. To make this recipe even healthier, use the cauliflower on top of a salad and skip the tortillas! Let me know what you try!

If you don’t have an air fryer and have some extra kitchen space, I highly recommend one! They are pretty big and take up lots of room, but on a crazy weeknight, it’s a lifesaver in helping put together a quick meal! This is the one I have! AND it’s on sale!!

Holiday Party Planning

Every year, probably since my first year at college, I have found an excuse to host a party. Whether it be friendsgiving, a house warming party, a goodbye brunch, a taco Tuesday party, you name it, I’ve probably hosted it! Most of my friends and family have heard me say, I live for parties, but especially planning them! I’m a control freak, so this is where I can allow that aspect of my personality to shine, and shine bright!

As the years have passed, and the party budget has gotten better, so has my planning. This week, I’m sharing with you my party planning tips and the most requested recipe from our this year’s holiday party! Unfortunately, I am not sharing many pictures because I was too busy enjoying our own annual holiday party to take any. Sign of a good party!

To help me plan the party, I had to make lists, and lots of them. Lucky for you, I’ve turned the notes on my phone (see these below) into a template for you to use! Check out my party planning template here! If you would like the word version so that you can edit and make your own, just let me know!

This year, we invited about 30 people, ended up with 20. To account for munchies that would ensue after a few Jell-O shots, I planned to have six savory food options and two sweet options. Pretty much everything you see up above was devoured!

Below you’ll see the phone format of my party planning template I linked above. I start making this list about two weeks in advanced so I’m not scrambling week of, to figure out what I need. This year, which I had not done prior, I added the timeline and let me tell you, this made the BIGGEST difference! Not only did it allow me to build in time to relax BEFORE the party, but more importantly it allowed me to ENJOY my party!

I fully recognize that my list may not make 100% sense to those of you not in my brain, BUT this worked for me, so do what works for you! Something I find VERY helpful when party planning and serving, plan ahead what you’ll be serving your food on. The last thing you want is realizing day of that you you don’t have the right vessel for your yummy treats! You’ll see I put in parentheses where I planned to serve each dish, next to the dish name.

Another helpful tip that came in handy this year, was I set aside a bag in my kitchen pantry with any crackers, bread, cups, plates, napkins, supplies, I may have needed throughout the party so I wouldn’t have to be scrambling looking for said supplies while also trying to host.

While I can’t force any of you to plan the way I do, and maybe you have some better ideas than the ones I provide here, I highly giving my template a try for you next event! I’m using all of these tips again for Thanksgiving this Thursday! What’s your favorite party planning tip?

As my thanks to you all for joining me on this blogging journey, I’m sharing with you the most requested recipe from the party! A great appetizer to bring to a Thanksgiving feast!

Chicken Parmesan Dip

Ingredients:

  • 1 container of Ricotta cheese
  • 1 container of Marinara sauce, divided
  • 1/2 cup of freshly grated Parmesan
  • 6 breaded chicken tenders, cooked and chopped. (If you live on the Southeast coast, I highly suggest buying the already made popcorn chicken at Publix)
  • 1 cup of shredded mozzarella
  • Preferred loaf of bread for dipping
  • Salt
  • Pepper

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 °
  2. Spread ricotta on the bottom of skillet or pie plate. I like to use my cast iron skillet for this recipe.
  3. Layer as follows: half the marinara, 1/2 of Parmesan cheese, chicken tenders/popcorn chicken, 1/2 of mozzarella, remaining marinara, remaining Parmesan, remaining mozzarella. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Place in the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes. I like to leave mine covered and uncover for the last 5 minutes. You can also broil for two minutes to give a nice crisp to the top layer of cheese!
  5. Serve warm with your preferred bread and enjoy!

Side note: I fully am aware that none of my food options, especially this chicken parm dip were dairy free…trust me I paid for it!

Happy Thanksgiving my friends!

Holiday Decorating

This weekend it hit 50 degrees in Miami and it couldn’t have been more perfect timing, considering we got our Christmas tree! I know, it’s not even Thanksgiving yet, BUT we are having our annual holiday party this week and I can’t imagine hosting this party WITHOUT a Christmas tree. Check back next week to see all my holiday party planning tips! By the way, finding a Christmas tree before Thanksgiving was more challenging than I thought, especially in Miami.

If you’ve been following along, you’ll see some decor hasn’t changed, like the pumpkins. I love all the pumpkins we added this year!

When Joel and I had Christmas together in our first home we invested in some ornaments, tree topper and holiday decor that were timeless, the rest of our ornaments I crafted or we’ve gotten along the way. My favorite ornament we added this year was from our trip our Beaver Creek in March when we got engaged! But if you look close at our tree, you’ll see how we’ve been able to personalize and make our tree true to us.

To make these ornaments, I purchased wood chips on Amazon (holes for hooks already on them!) and I painted half the wood chips with chalkboard paint and the others I ordered our favorite pictures from throughout the years and sized them small enough to put on the ornaments! Below I’ll share with you how I created each.

Name Ornaments

  1. Paint wood chip with black chalkboard paint (I didn’t paint the entire chip, I left a ring around the edges)
  2. Using a chalkboard pen (I used white) write/draw what works best for you!

Our ornaments feature all of our family members on both sides.

Photo Ornaments

  1. Using a photo editing software, size your selected pictures so that they’ll fit on your wood chips (I sized my pictures at about 1.75″x 1.75″)
  2. Have photos printed
  3. Cut photos so that they fit on your wood chips (you’ll have to do this one by one since all wood chips are sized differently and not perfectly round
  4. Using a clear mod podge, place your photo on wood chip and use a paintbrush to paint a layer of mod podge over photo. This will act as an adhesive for your photos!

You don’t have to go crazy, or spend tons of money to cozy up your home for the holidays. I have gone accumulating our decorations over the years and Michael’s (with coupons), Bullseye’s playground @ Target, and the Dollar Store have been my best friends when it comes to holiday decorating!

Share with me your holiday decor!

You Guac My World

This post was originally going to be just an Instagram post, but then I realized, my guac needed it’s own blog post. I mean we had an entire family photo shoot centered around our guac (thank you Maria!). You can say it’s pretty important around here, also, margaritas.

Guac is a staple in our house, summer time, winter time (is there a difference in Miami?), when we’re entertaining or it’s just us. My favorite time to make it is when it’s just the three of us because Thomas’ loves to help out in the kitchen and I’ll take those little hands helping out whenever I can!

What makes my recipe different? Chipotle powder. We tend to recreate a lot of Mexican dishes around here and chances are, there’s going to be some variation of chipotle in it. We particularly love making our margaritas with this chipotle tequila! I always encourage you take my recipes and make them your own, if you’re not into chipotle, you can just omit, or try another preferred spice! Let me know what you try!

Ingredients & Recipe

Ingredients (for 4-6 people)

  • 3 Haas avocados, peeled and pitted
  • Juice of 2 limes
  • Salt*
  • Pepper*
  • Garlic owder*
  • Cumin*
  • Chipotle powder*
  • 1/2 red onion, diced
  • 1/4 a cup of chopped clantro

*Note: As always, I never measure my seasoning. I go tasting as I cook/prepare and adjust as needed. I encourage you to do the same!

  1. In a large enough bowl, add avocados and lime juice and mash to desired consistency. I like our guac a little chunky.
  2. Add in seasoning, salt, pepper, garlic powder, cumin and chipotle powder, onion and cilantro.
  3. Mix all together.
  4. Serve with chips and enjoy!

Intermittent Fasting

This body brought to you by Intermittent Fasting

A few weeks ago we talked about my “lifestyle changes” and I touched upon the things that have helped me to lose weight and keep it off this year. Today I want to share with you a week in the life intermittent-fasting-Alana! For 7 days I tracked how long I fasted, what workouts I did (if any), my water intake, and what I ate.

Where I often struggle the most is snacking or when there are starchy carbs present. Give me a loaf of bread, a bowl of rice, a plate of pasta, and I’m a happy girl! There’s a famous expression in Spanish that goes, “barriga llena, corazon contento”, which translates to, “belly full, happy heart”, this is my motto when enjoying a plate of carbs.

Back to fasting. At the start of the week I weighed myself and I was weighing 139. At the end of the week I weighed myself and I was 138. You might say, well that’s just a pound, but by this point in my journey, a pound is a lot for me on a week to week basis. You’ll see my eating wasn’t necessarily the healthiest, so I’ll gladly give that one pound to wherever those pounds go!

Some notes to consider about this “lifestyle log”:

  1. Everyday my breakfast consisted of one scoop of collagen powder in my tea. Technically, the collagen powder is not “allowed” during fasting, but tea is.
  2. Overall, it was a pretty standard week for me, although there were some more outings and snacking than usual, thanks PMS.
  3. I try to mimic HIIT workouts when I do at home workouts. Pinterest is a great resource for this, you can check out some of the workouts I use, here!
  4. To help me keep track of my fasting daily, I use this app, definitely helps while I’m on vacation!

As I tried to emphasize in my Lifestyle Changes post, this is what has worked for me. I take things day by day, listen to my body and try not to ALWAYS give into my cravings. But obviously, day 3 & 7 were a little hard for me!

I have gotten asked, how I maintain this while on vacation. Simply put, not easily, but I try my hardest. By now you’ve probably realized I’m a bit food obsessed and our vacations are usually centered around where we’re eating and drinking. For example, in August we spent a week at my family’s house in North Carolina, there’s a few restaurants there that I literally wait all year for! On this trip, I made it a point to do at least a 30 minute workout every morning and we did do a lot of hiking. I also tried to do 15-16 hour fasts as much as possible, using my app helped me with this! But I definitely splurged on a few great dinners and didn’t beat myself up over it either! Work hard, play harder, am I right? On my most recent trip to Puerto Rico, I only got one work out in because #drinking, but I was much more selective about what I ate as a result. It’s all about balance guys! Eat 3 bowls of rice for dinner, spend an extra 20 minutes (or more) at the gym the next day!

I believe that intermittent fasting has worked the best for me because at no point do I feel like I’m depriving myself. While there may be some hours I’m technically depriving myself of the foods I love to enjoy! On this journey I’ve also learned to not beat myself up for one bad day (hey, maybe ever two), but to keep trying and push myself a little more the next day!

Still have questions about intermittent fasting, let me know!

Girls Trip Looks

If you follow me on Instagram, you are well aware of the bachelorette party I got to celebrate this past weekend for my best friend Kamille! It was so fun to see this celebration come to life as it had been in the works for quite some time. My Amazon shopping was in full effect in preparation for #kamjam! This week I’m sharing all my looks (as well as the links to shop them) and fun pictures from our trip. I’ll also be sharing some of our itinerary. We had such a blast celebrating this bride to be and can’t wait to see her tie the knot!

Not an amazon find, but similar looks here: option 1 option 2

Here’s a break down of our itinerary for our weekend in San Juan, Puerto Rico:

Friday:

  • Check into our Airbnb
  • Brunch at Bistro Cafe. Insane portions and fun brunch drinks!
  • Hanging out at the house, late lunch/early dinner brought to our house by a local chef! Great option so that we didn’t have to cook ourselves and could relax at the house!
  • Drinks and dancing in Old San Juan and late night at La Placita. Perfect night for bar hopping with locals.

Saturday:

  • Late wake up
  • Lunch at La Bombonera for their famous Mallorca sandwiches, could have eaten 10!
  • Walking and exploring Old San Juan
  • Dinner at Casita Miramar, if you go here, you need to try their trifongo, AMAZING!

Sunday:

  • Early wake up
  • All day and all-inclusive catamaran tour linked here for the exact tour we did! Highly recommend this!
  • Drinks and dinner at Caña at the San Juan Hotel, try their tamarindo spicy margarita!
